General Administration
Fr. Tony Lopes who hails from Chinchinim was ordained in 1984. Well known for his austere and exemplary lifestyle, he has spent most of his years in training students aspiring for priesthood. He finished his licentiate in Rome after which he worked for almost three years amidst the tribals in Jharkhand. Fr. Tony is novice to the new job, having successfully completed his term as Vicar General of the Society during the last five years. The 33 delegates participating in the Chapter also elected the General Councilors and Treasurer who will assist Fr. Tony in the governance of the Society. Fr. Walter Gomes, Rector of the Philosophate at Nagpur was elected the Vicar General. Fr. Norman Almeida, Fr. Anthnoy D’Silva and Fr. Peter D’Mello were elected 2nd, 3rd and 4th Councilors respectively. Fr. Joseph Baptista, Mission Superior of Daman was elected the General Treasurer.

The present General Administration of the Society was
elected by the XVI General Chapter of the Society held on 9th August 2002. The
General Chapter of the Society is the body of representatives, which meet every
five years to take stock, plan and elect its Superior General and his
Councillors for the next five years. In his maiden speech as the Superior
General the 46 – year old Fr. Tony Lopes said, “The new Millennium has dawned.
This is springtime for the Society of Pilar. No one is so poor that he has
nothing to give; no one is so rich that he has nothing to receive. Let us commit
ourselves and be authentic missionaries who glow with joy based on deep faith in
order to build communities and a communion of communities”. His exhortation was
heartily received by the members.
